Founded in 1995, the Friends of the Alfred Shaker Museum (FASM) is a grassroots group of volunteers focused on raising funds and providing labor to restore the interior and exterior of the Museum building. The Museum displays Shaker items and is available as an educational facility and community center. When the library is finished, it will house a collection of print and media resources on the Shakers that will be available to scholars and researchers.

The Museum holds various functions to encourage the public to share in the growing development of the building.

Our “Welcome” Policy

Alfred Shaker Museum holds a series of public events each year that are free to the public. No admission is charged to visit the museum, or to attend most of the museum’s public events.

As a young museum, though, we need help to renovate and maintain our building, build our collections, and sponsor such events. So donations are gratefully accepted and we rely on many talented volunteers to help us reach our goals. We also are trying to grow our endowment fund, which aims for $100,000 to support operations of the museum.

The Friends of Alfred Shaker Museum are grateful to a number of foundations in Maine which have supported our efforts over years. Our thanks go to:

  • the Davis Family Foundation
  • Narragansett Number One Foundation
  • Kennebunk Savings Bank Foundation
  • the Maine Arts Commission
  • Maine Humanities Council
  • The Virginia Hodgkins Somers Foundation

We appreciate their roles in preserving, protecting, and enhancing Maine’s cultural life.

To all, a hearty thank you.

Meetings

FASM meets on the second Wednesday of each month (March-November) at 1:00 PM (Note new time!) at the Museum. Meetings are open to the public (unless otherwise specified).

In addition, FASM publishes a newsletter, the Shaker Hill Courier, for its members.

To join FASM or to volunteer, see our Become A Friend page.
